25 Gulden Roodborstje (1971-1989)

25 Gulden Roodborstje (1971-1989)

1980–1989

About this item

The 25 gulden roodborstje is one of the most beloved Dutch banknotes ever produced. Designed by R.D.E. Oxenaar and issued from 1971 to 1989, it features a stylized European robin (roodborstje) in a bold, geometric design that was revolutionary for its time. The vivid red-orange color palette makes it one of the most visually striking banknotes in European monetary history.

The roodborstje is a favorite among Dutch banknote collectors because of its perfect combination of beautiful design and cultural significance. Oxenaar's designs for De Nederlandsche Bank won international acclaim and are considered among the finest banknote art ever created. The 25 gulden denomination was a workhorse of Dutch daily commerce, which means circulated examples are plentiful — but truly crisp, uncirculated notes are genuinely scarce.

When buying, grade the note carefully. Look for center folds, corner handling, and any pinholes (common on notes that were pinned to receipts). The vibrant red-orange color should be strong — faded notes have been exposed to light and are less desirable. Uncirculated (UNC) examples with sharp corners and no folds command the highest prices. Check the serial number for interesting patterns — fancy serials add a collector premium. Different date variants exist across the series run; earlier dates tend to be scarcer in high grades.
