Atmosfear Bordspel (1991)

Atmosfear (released as Nightmare in some markets) is a horror-themed board game from 1991 that used a VHS tape as a game timer and host. The Gatekeeper — a menacing figure on the TV screen — would interrupt gameplay with commands, forfeits, and jump scares. It was a genuinely innovative concept that made game night feel like an event.

Atmosfear is a nostalgia powerhouse for anyone who grew up in the early 90s. The VHS-driven mechanic made it a unique social experience that can't really be replicated by modern games. The Dutch version (bordspel) is especially collectible in the Netherlands and Belgium, where it was a massive hit. Complete sets are getting harder to find as VHS tapes degrade and pieces go missing over decades of use.
