Atmosfear Bordspel (1991)

1990–1994

About this item

Atmosfear (released as Nightmare in some markets) is a horror-themed board game from 1991 that used a VHS tape as a game timer and host. The Gatekeeper — a menacing figure on the TV screen — would interrupt gameplay with commands, forfeits, and jump scares. It was a genuinely innovative concept that made game night feel like an event.

Atmosfear is a nostalgia powerhouse for anyone who grew up in the early 90s. The VHS-driven mechanic made it a unique social experience that can't really be replicated by modern games. The Dutch version (bordspel) is especially collectible in the Netherlands and Belgium, where it was a massive hit. Complete sets are getting harder to find as VHS tapes degrade and pieces go missing over decades of use.

Completeness is critical: check for all player pieces, keys, and the VHS tape. The tape should play without tracking issues — test it if you can. The game board, instruction manual, and all cards should be present. Missing keys or character pieces are common and hard to replace individually. The box itself often shows significant shelf wear, so a clean box adds real value.
