Apple Macintosh Plus Home Computer

1980–1989

About this item

The Macintosh Plus was the third Mac Apple ever made, released in 1986, and it became the workhorse that proved the Macintosh concept was viable. With 1MB of RAM (expandable to 4MB), a SCSI port for external storage, and that iconic 9-inch monochrome screen, it was the first Mac that felt like a real computer rather than an expensive curiosity. It stayed in production until 1990 — one of the longest runs in Mac history.

The Mac Plus is deeply collectible as the machine that defined the classic Macintosh form factor. That compact all-in-one design with the built-in CRT is instantly recognizable, and it has become a symbol of early personal computing and 80s tech culture. Working units are prized by retrocomputing enthusiasts, while non-working units are popular as display pieces and have even crossed over into the art and design world as aesthetic objects.

When buying, the CRT is the biggest concern. These screens can develop burn-in, geometry issues, or simply fail after 40 years. Power it on and check for a stable, bright image. Listen for any high-pitched whining or crackling from the analog board — capacitor issues are common and can be dangerous if left unrepaired. The internal floppy drive will almost certainly need a new belt or head cleaning. Check that the keyboard and mouse are included: original Apple peripherals add real value, and replacements are not cheap.
