Sega Mega Drive

1990–1994

About this item

The Sega Mega Drive (known as Genesis in North America) defined 16-bit gaming when it launched in 1990. Sega's aggressive marketing and killer lineup — Sonic the Hedgehog, Streets of Rage, Golden Axe — made it the cool kid's console of the early '90s. In Europe, the Mega Drive was an absolute juggernaut.

This console is a cornerstone of any retro collection. The PAL Mega Drive with its distinct "16-BIT" branding on the top shell is the version most European collectors grew up with. Model 1 consoles (the larger, original design with the volume slider for headphones) are generally preferred over the cost-reduced Model 2.

When shopping, test the cartridge slot thoroughly — worn pin connectors cause flickering or black screens. Cosmetically, check for cracks around the cartridge slot and expansion port cover. A boxed Model 1 with both controllers and the original RF unit is the sweet spot. The Mega Drive also supports a huge accessory ecosystem (Mega-CD, 32X), so bundled add-ons can spike the value significantly.
