Sony D-50 Discman CD Player

Sony D-50 Discman CD Player

1980–1984

About this item

The Sony D-50 (also known as the D-5) is the world's first portable CD player, released in 1984. Before the Discman name was even coined, this chunky silver device proved that you could take digital audio on the go. It's a genuine piece of consumer electronics history — the starting point for portable digital music that eventually led to the iPod.

Collectors value the D-50 as a landmark piece of audio history. It's the kind of item that belongs in a museum, and serious Sony collectors and audio enthusiasts actively hunt for them. Working units are increasingly rare because the early CD laser mechanisms were not built to last 40 years.

The laser pickup is the critical component — many D-50 units can no longer read discs. Always ask the seller to demonstrate playback if possible. Check the battery compartment for corrosion, test all the buttons, and inspect the headphone jack for crackling. A unit with the original carrying case and AC adapter is a premium find. Even non-working units have value as display pieces, but a working D-50 is the real prize.
