Super Nintendo (SNES)

1990–1994

About this item

The Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) is widely regarded as one of the greatest consoles ever made. Arriving in Europe in 1992, its library reads like a hall of fame: Super Mario World, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Super Metroid, Chrono Trigger. The European/PAL version features the sleek, rounded redesign that's arguably more attractive than the boxy US model.

The SNES sits at the emotional center of '90s gaming nostalgia, and the collector market reflects that. Consoles in good condition hold their value exceptionally well, and the game library includes some of the most sought-after cartridges in retro gaming. It's a console that genuinely rewards collecting.

When buying a SNES, yellowing of the plastic shell is the biggest cosmetic issue — it's caused by a flame retardant in the plastic and affects most units to some degree. Test both controller ports and the cartridge slot. Complete-in-box consoles with matching serial numbers on the box and unit are the gold standard. Check that the power supply is the correct PAL version, as using the wrong adapter can damage the console.
