Tomy Water Game

1975–1989

About this item

Tomy Water Games (also known as Tomy Waterful or Tomy Pocket Games) are the handheld water-filled toys that kept kids entertained long before Game Boys existed. Produced from the early 1980s onward, these pocket-sized games used water pressure from a button to shoot rings onto hooks, land balls in baskets, or guide shapes through obstacles. No batteries, no screens — just pure analogue fun in a clear plastic case filled with water.

These little games are a nostalgia deep cut. Nearly everyone over 35 has a memory of playing one — in the car, at the dentist's waiting room, or on holiday. The simplicity and tactile satisfaction of the water mechanics make them oddly compelling even today. Early '80s models with specific themes (basketball, ring toss, submarine) are the most collectible. Tomy produced dozens of variations, and hunting down specific models has become a niche but passionate hobby.

Condition is the big challenge with water games. The most critical check: is the water still inside? Many have leaked over the decades, and a dry Tomy water game is essentially a display piece. The water should be clear, not cloudy or discoloured. Check that the button mechanism still works and creates enough pressure to move the pieces inside. The plastic case should be free of major scratches and cracks. Boxed examples are very rare since these were pocket toys that went everywhere — a mint-in-box Tomy water game is a genuine find.
