Akira on VHS is where Western anime fandom begins for many collectors. Katsuhiro Otomo's 1988 cyberpunk masterpiece arrived on European shelves in the early 90s through a patchwork of regional distributors — from the UK's Manga Entertainment release to Italian Multivision tapes and rare French editions.

The UK Manga Video release with the red and blue cover art is the most recognized version in Europe. Japanese original pressings are the top-tier collectible, especially sealed. The dubbed vs. subtitled distinction matters to collectors — some editions only included one audio track. Condition is everything with anime VHS: the collector base is meticulous.

Check for the correct age rating sticker for the region — some copies were re-stickered for different markets. Verify the tape plays without tracking issues, as many copies were watched repeatedly. A complete copy with the original insert and undamaged sleeve art is what drives the premium.
