About this item
The Commodore 1541 is the floppy disk drive that defined home computing in the 1980s. As the primary storage device for the Commodore 64, this bulky 5.25-inch drive with its distinctive beige case and mechanical clunking sounds was the gateway to loading games, programs, and data for millions of users. In the Netherlands, where the C64 had a massive following, the 1541 was an essential peripheral.
The 1541 was notoriously slow — loading a game could take minutes — but it was also remarkably versatile. Its own built-in processor (a 6502, the same as the C64 itself) made it practically a computer in its own right. Today, working 1541 drives are essential for retro computing enthusiasts maintaining original C64 setups.
RetroMarketCap tracks live Commodore 1541 floppy drive prices across the European secondhand market. Working units with power supply and cable are the most sought after on the Dutch secondhand market.
