About this item
The original PlayStation GTA prices on packaging above all: the early long-box and big-box editions trade far above a loose jewel-case disc. The original Grand Theft Auto on PS1 (1997) is where one of gaming's most controversial and commercially successful franchises began. Before the 3D open worlds, GTA was a top-down, chaotic sandbox where you stole cars, ran from cops, and caused mayhem across three cities. It was crude, it was shocking for its time, and it was an absolute blast.
The PS1 original is a fascinating collector's piece because it's so different from what GTA became. The top-down perspective, the pixelated chaos, the provocative marketing — it's a time capsule of late-'90s gaming culture. The PAL version with its distinctive cover art and manual is what European collectors seek. It's not the most expensive PS1 game, but it's one of the most historically significant.
When buying, check the disc for scratches — PS1 games are read from the bottom and even light scratches can cause freezing. Make sure the case isn't cracked (very common with PS1 jewel cases) and that the manual is included. The back cover insert is often missing or damaged. Black-label originals are worth more than later Platinum/budget re-releases, so check the spine color.
