About this item
Purple Rain (1984) is Prince's magnum opus — the soundtrack to his semi-autobiographical film and the album that made him a global superstar. Tracks like "When Doves Cry," "Let's Go Crazy," and the title track are among the most iconic songs of the 1980s. The original vinyl release on Warner Bros. Records, with its purple-tinted cover photo of Prince on a motorcycle, is one of the defining album covers of the decade.
Purple Rain on vinyl is a cornerstone record for any serious collection. It spent 24 consecutive weeks at #1 on the Billboard 200, sold over 25 million copies worldwide, and is consistently ranked among the greatest albums ever made. Prince's death in 2016 sent values climbing, and demand has remained strong. First pressings with specific matrix numbers are particularly sought after by audiophile collectors.
When buying, check the matrix/runout numbers in the dead wax to identify the pressing — early US pressings (with "1-25110" in the matrix) are most desirable. Play-grade the vinyl: look for scratches, scuffs, and groove wear under good light. The inner sleeve with lyrics and credits should be present. The cover should be free of ring wear, seam splits, and water damage. Given how many copies were pressed, there's no reason to settle for a beat-up copy — be patient and wait for a clean one.
