About this item
The Sega Mega CD (1993 in Europe) is not a console but an add-on: a CD-ROM drive that clamps to a Mega Drive and cannot run without one. That dependency defines the market — listings are almost always for the pair, and a Mega CD alone is worth considerably less than a working set.
Two revisions circulate. The Mega CD 1 is the front-loading tray unit the Mega Drive sits on top of; the Mega CD 2 is the smaller top-loading model that sits alongside. European sales were poor — the hardware was expensive and the library thin — so PAL units are scarce and command real money.
When buying, the laser is the failure point: ask whether it has been tested with a pressed disc, not just powered on. Confirm which model is on offer, and that the correct power supply and the Mega Drive link cable are included, since the two units need both. Capacitor failure is common at this age; a unit described as "needs recap" is a repair project rather than a working machine.
