About this item

Thunderdome XVII - Messenger of Death (1997) continued the relentless release schedule of ID&T's flagship hardcore compilation series. By mid-1997, the Dutch gabber scene was evolving rapidly — newer styles of hardcore were emerging, tempos were being pushed even further, and the production techniques were growing more sophisticated. This double CD captures that transitional energy, sitting between the classic gabber sound of the earlier volumes and the darker, more fragmented hardcore that would follow in subsequent years.

Collectors prize the late-nineties Thunderdome volumes because they document a scene in flux. The series was commercially massive in the Benelux region, but that mainstream popularity meant copies were treated as disposable consumer products rather than collectibles. Most were played at house parties, in cars, and on portable CD players until they were too scratched to function. Finding a copy where both the packaging and media have survived in good condition is a genuine challenge, and demand from nostalgic collectors who lived through the era keeps prices firm.

Condition checks should start with the case and hinges — double jewel cases are fragile and replacements never look quite right. Verify both discs are the correct pressings by checking the matrix numbers in the inner ring. The booklet should be complete, with no torn or missing pages. Watch for disc rot on silver-bottom CDs from this era, which shows as small brown spots or pin-prick holes when held to light. If buying online, ask the seller to photograph the data side of both discs before committing.
