About this item
The Digital Video Cartridge is the MPEG-1 decoder module that turns a Philips CD-i into a full-motion video machine. Without it, the format's headline titles — Burn:Cycle, the Video CD movie range, several FMV games — either refuse to run or fall back to a degraded mode.
That dependency makes it the one CD-i accessory that genuinely matters, and it is priced accordingly: often more than the games it enables and sometimes approaching the cost of a console. It appeared in several revisions, chiefly the 22ER9141 and 22ER9956, with model-specific variants for the 450 and the docking-unit machines.
When buying, match the part number to your player — not every cartridge fits every CD-i, and this is the most common buying mistake. Ask whether it has been tested with an actual Video CD, since a cartridge that seats correctly can still have failed decoder silicon, and check the edge connector for corrosion.
