The Lion King VHS

The Lion King (1994) is the best-selling VHS tape of all time, with over 30 million copies sold in the United States alone. As the crown jewel of Disney's Renaissance era, it remains one of the most recognisable home video releases ever produced.

The most sought-after version is the Walt Disney Classics release with the Black Diamond logo on the spine — early prints with the hologram sticker command the highest prices. The Masterpiece Collection reissue (1995) is more common but still collectible in sealed condition. International PAL versions from Europe, particularly the Dutch, German, and Italian releases, are frequently found on Vinted and Marktplaats.

When buying secondhand, check whether the clamshell case is intact and look for the hologram security sticker — its presence confirms an original release. Inspect the tape for mould, especially on copies stored in damp conditions. Sealed copies carry a significant premium, but verify the shrink wrap hasn't been resealed. The most valuable copies are sealed Black Diamond editions in mint condition.
