About this item
The NeverEnding Story spans a huge range on tape because edition is everything — a common late reissue and an early sealed release share almost nothing but the title. The NeverEnding Story (1984), directed by Wolfgang Petersen, is one of the most beloved fantasy films of the 1980s. Based on Michael Ende's novel, the film follows Bastian Bux as he discovers a mysterious book that draws him into the magical world of Fantasia. With its groundbreaking practical effects, iconic Falkor the Luckdragon, and Limahl's unforgettable theme song, it became a defining film for an entire generation.
Original VHS releases from the mid-1980s are the most collectible, particularly first pressings with the Warner Home Video clamshell case. PAL versions distributed in Europe through Warner and RCA/Columbia are commonly found on the European secondhand market. The Italian release on General Video is considered rare and commands higher prices.
When buying secondhand, check the tape housing for cracks and ensure the reels spin freely. Play-tested copies are worth more than untested ones. Look for intact cover art without water damage or sun fading — the iconic Falkor artwork on the sleeve is what makes these tapes display-worthy. Sealed copies are extremely rare for a film this popular and carry a significant premium.
