Ristar (1995) is Sonic Team's last original Mega Drive platformer — a star-shaped hero who grabs and swings by his stretching arms, released in the same year Sega asked everyone to buy a Saturn instead.
The timing is the whole story. It arrived as the Mega Drive was being retired, so the PAL print run was small and shops moved on quickly. It has since been reappraised as one of the best-looking games on the system, and prices reflect both the scarcity and the reassessment.
When buying, expect a wide spread: loose cartridges are affordable while complete boxed PAL copies sit several times higher. Check the manual is present and the box spine has not faded — Mega Drive boxes are card and sun-bleach badly. Ristar also appears in Sega Mega Drive Classics and on the Mega Drive Mini; those are not the cartridge.
