About this item
The SL-1200 has one of the widest spreads we track, and it is service history that explains it: a recently-serviced MK2 with fresh pitch fader and clean platter bearing sits at the top of the range. The Technics SL-1200 is the most iconic turntable ever made. Originally released by Matsushita (Panasonic) in 1972 and revised as the MK2 in 1979, it became the worldwide standard for DJing. Its direct-drive motor, rock-solid build quality, and precise pitch control made it the backbone of hip-hop, house, techno, and of course the Dutch gabber scene. Two 1200s and a mixer — that's the universal DJ setup.
The SL-1200 is collectible because it's both a working tool and a cultural artifact. Production of the original line ended in 2010, and while Technics revived the 1200 name with new models, the originals — especially the MK2 and MK5 — have a loyal following. In the Netherlands, these turntables were essential equipment for gabber and hardcore DJs, and they remain central to vinyl culture.
When buying, check the tonearm bearing for play or wobble — it should move freely with no lateral slop. Test the pitch slider across its full range and verify the motor starts and holds speed consistently. The RCA cables are hardwired, so check for signal in both channels. Cosmetic condition varies widely since these were working DJ tools. A unit with low hours, no cigarette burns on the platter, and intact dust cover hinges is a good find.
